Turmeric is a finger-like species. Unlike turmeric, Black turmeric is more like a ginger in appearance and the black turmeric is characterized by its bluish color whereas turmeric is yellow in color. Yellow turmeric and the black turmeric both are found particularly in India. The black turmeric and yellow turmeric are found in the northern region and southern region of India respectively.
Black turmeric(Curcuma caesia) and turmeric(Curcuma longa) both are rhizome parts of a plant(underground stem) and belong to the same genus Curcuma which is placed under the family Zingiberaceae. Both black turmeric and turmeric are known for their vast medicinal purposes. The Black turmeric is so expensive than yellow turmeric as it has more medicinal benefits and It is one of the endangering species in India. Both the species have some common medicinal features such as anti-inflammatory, pain soothing, treating infections and bruises.

The shelf life expectancy of turmeric is said to be around 2 – 3 years which is quite higher than that of black turmeric, which is expected to last for 3 – 4 months.
The turmeric is bought for its edibility rather than for its remedial purpose and it is used for preparing masalas in Indian households. The black turmeric leaves vary from yellow turmeric by having a bluish midrib.
